Ainsi, la Taverne de Pandala, là où l'on trouve la meilleure chopine de bière au riz, n'installa pas son habituelle terrasse. Les habitués, réfugiés à l'intérieur du bâtiment bruyant, parlaient, riaient, et buvaient. L'ambiance était joyeuse et chaleureuse, tout le monde y avait ses petits rituels : l'un allait remplir sa chope de liquide alcoolisé, l'autre tentait d'obtenir de précieuses informations sur la serveuse -en vain- et d’autres préféraient raconter des histoires toutes aussi folles les une que les autres, le tout accompagné par l’alcool et les rires. Et c'est ainsi, autour d'une table, sûrement en ébène, que s’organisaient de longues parties de cartes, à ne plus en voir la fin. En revanche, elles étaient si animées que même un vieil Enutrof ayant passé sa journée dans les mines ne se serait endormi. Plus les heures passaient, plus les chopes se vidaient, plus elles se remplissaient, et ainsi de suite.<br /> Dans toute cette convivialité, deux aventuriers sortaient du lot. Au premier regard, on comprenait qu’ils étaient plus habitués à la &quot;Taverne du Pandawa Ivre&quot; que quiconque. Ils riaient à gorge déployée, balançaient des blagues salaces à tout bout de champ, vidaient leurs chopes comme personne, ne payaient rien et ne se gênaient en aucun cas. Ils paraissaient simplement chez eux. On ne connaissait rien d’eux, -et on n’en saurait jamais plus- mis à part leurs surnoms, dont je n'évoquerai pas la provenance, leurs passe-temps favoris, et leur passion pour ce qu’ils avaient appelés l'alcoolophilie.<br /> Le premier, qui avait pour surnom &quot;Chivas-Regal&quot;, était un être charmant -son allure de félin en faisait craquer plus d'une-, jouait et trichait admirablement bien aux cartes, connaissait les risques du Pile ou Face par cœur, et bluffait au Poker comme Ecaflip lui-même. L'autre était une femme, une vraie déesse, d'après tous ceux qui la connaissaient. Elle se faisait appeler &quot;Taittinger&quot;, et participait toujours aux parties de cartes accompagnée de ses poupées, portes-bonheurs d'après ses dires.<br /> <br /> <br /> Un jour que la garde royale d’Amakna s’accordait une pause à la Taverne la plus populaire du Monde des Douze -et dans laquelle séjournaient toujours Chivas' et Tait'-, une querelle éclata entre deux habitants des cités ennemies, Bonta et Brâkmar. Les miliciens d’Amakna, neutres par définition, ne purent rester hors du conflit, et allièrent leurs forces pour tenter de séparer les deux belligérants. Mais c’était sans compter leur force : si Amayiro et Oto Mustam les avait choisis, c’est qu’il y avait bien une raison. Le Bontarien, d’un coup de flèche explosive, envoya valser la moitié de la troupe, et le disciple vicieux de Sram posa un piège mortel dans lequel les Amakniens restants ne manquèrent pas de tomber. C’est ici qu’entrèrent ''Chivas-Regal et Taittinger'' dans la bataille : ils se postèrent chacun face à un &quot;ailé&quot;, comme on les appelait, et leur tinrent à peu près ce langage :<br /> <br /> - Les guerres de cité, on n’en veut pas ici. Les tavernes sont des lieux sacrés, et, à ce que je sache, &quot;armes&quot; et &quot;destruction&quot; ne font pas parti des maîtres mots de ces lieux.<br /> <br /> - Vous sortez, ou vous mourez.<br /> Comme on pouvait s’y attendre, les adversaires se rebiffèrent -ils ne comptaient pas se laisser marcher sur les pieds par deux poivrots- et se postèrent en position d’attaque. Nos deux amis n’étaient pas très puissants, mais assez, en alliant leur force, pour botter le cul des rebelles.
